Prep surfaces by removing all traces of wax, grease, silicone, oil and other contaminants with a detergent wash, followed with a solvent-based cleaner. Abrade surface with 600-800 grit sandpaper to ensure proper adhesion. Re-clean with a final prep cleaner. Tack entire surface.
Thoroughly shake, then stir Classic Series Acrylic Enamel. To ensure color consistency when working with multiple gallons, it is always recommended to blend the contents of all gallons together prior to reduction. Mix with Acrylic Enamel Reducer 4:1 by volume (4 parts paint, 1 part reducer). Depending on temperature, air flow and other conditions, additional reduction may be required. Always be sure to chose the correct speed Acrylic Enamel Reducer for the conditions at the time of application. Using the correct speed will reduce the risk of application errors including runs, orange peel, die back, wrinkling, solvent pop and more. For improved durability, increased gloss and faster dry times, add one pint Classic Series Wet Look Hardener for every gallon of paint. When using optional Acrylic Enamel Hardener, mix ratio becomes 8:2:1 (8 parts paint, 2 parts reducer, 1 part hardener).
Pot life of paint once mixed with hardener is approximately 2-3 hours at 70°F.
Use an HVLP gun with a 1.2—1.4 mm tip and 8-10 psi at the cap. Refer to spray equipment manufacturer’s recommendations for further information. Apply 2-3 medium wet coats as necessary to achieve the desired coverage, allowing each coat to dry hand slick (approximately 20-30 minutes) before applying the next coat. A dry film thickness of 2 mils is recommended. Be sure to spray even, consistent coats with proper technique. For metallic and pearl colors, consistent application technique is critical to prevent mottling and other inconsistencies in the finish. Uneven coats resulting in wet/dry areas will create the appearance of striping or spotting. For colors with lower hiding ability, a consistent, solid-colored ground coat is recommended.
Classis Series Acrylic Enamel will dry tack-free in one hour (two hours if applied without the optional hardener). Dry time may be more or less depending on temperature, air movement, film thickness and other factors. May be force dried for 30 minutes at 140°F after a 20-30 minute flash. Do not force dry if applied without optional hardener. Wait at least 24 hours to tape or otherwise handle. If applied without optional hardener, wait at least a week before taping on the surface.
Close all containers tightly after each use. Clean gun and spray equipment with gun wash or other appropriate solvent product immediately after application to prevent damage.
Wait at least 24-48 hours before polishing Classic Series Acrylic Enamel paint, depending on temperature, air movement film thickness and other factors. If applied without optional hardener, wait at least a month before polishing. To polish, sand with 1500 grit or finer to open the film and remove any imperfections in the finish. For metallic/pearl colors, lightly sand only. Aggressive sanding, even with 1500 grit, can disturb the effect particles near the surface of the film. Follow with 2000 grit then use a high quality finishing compound followed by a finishing glaze applied by hand or with a variable speed buffer.
